چکیده

We discuss current observational and theoretical knowledge of magnetic fields, especially the large-scale structure in the disks and halos of spiral galaxies. Among other topics, we consider the enhancement of global magnetic fields in the interarm regions, magnetic spiral arms, and representations as superpositions of azimuthal modes, emphasizing a number of unresolved questions. It is argued that a turbulent hydromagnetic dynamo of some kind and an inverse cascade 1Now at Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU, United Kingdom. 155 0066-4146/96/0915-0155$08.00 July 24, 1996 9:49 Annual Reviews BRANTEX1 AR12-05

Pgms: to Study the Galactic Magnetism out of the Galactic Plane

The Parkes Galactic Meridian Survey (PGMS) is a 5 × 90 strip to map the polarized synchrotron emission along a Galactic meridian from the Galactic plane down to the south Galactic pole. The survey is carried out at the Parkes radio telescope at a frequency of 2.3 GHz with 30 adjacent 8-MHz bands which enable Faraday Rotation studies. The scientific goal is twofold: (1) To probe the Galactic mag...

a [ In this review I focus on a few selected topics, where recent theoretical and/or observational progress has been made and important developments are expected in the future. They include: 1) Evolution of isotopic ratios, 2) Mixing processes and dispersion in abundance ratios, 3) Abundance gradients in the Galactic disk (and abundance patterns in the inner Galaxy), 4) The question of primary ...

Lanthanide single molecule magnets: progress and perspective.

The last few years have seen a huge renaissance in the study of single molecule magnets (SMMs) thanks to the extensive applications of lanthanide ions with large inherent anisotropy in molecular magnetism. Particularly, the recent theoretical developments and the experimental expansion into the organometallic avenue have led to an eye-catching boost in this field. Here we highlight the recent p...

The Hanle Effect in Atomic and Molecular Lines: A New Look at the Sun’s Hidden Magnetism

This paper reviews some of the most recent advances in the application of the Hanle effect to solar physics, and how these developments are allowing us to explore the magnetism of the photospheric regions that look “empty” in solar magnetograms—that is, the Sun’s “hidden” magnetism. In particular, we show how a joint analysis of the Hanle effect in atomic and molecular lines indicates that ther...

Magnetism in reduced dimensions Magnétisme en dimensions réduites

We propose a short overview of a few selected issues of magnetism in reduced dimensions, which are the most relevant to set the background for more specialized contributions to the present Special Issue. Magnetic anisotropy in reduced dimensions is discussed, on a theoretical basis, then with experimental reports and views from surface to single-atom anisotropy. Then conventional magnetization ...
